Do I need to use a primer with the Peel-&-Stick Membrane?
The Peel & Stick Membrane requires a substrate to be smooth, clean, and dry for proper adhesion.
The Peel & Stick Membrane will not bond if:
- The floor is NOT smooth
- The floor is NOT clean
- The floor is NOT primed with a suitable/compatible primer
- The floor is NOT dry
A primer is REQUIRED on all OSB, porous, dusty, and unsmooth subfloors.
For “challenging substrates” (e.g., gypcrete with minor surface dust or weak spots), or when in doubt, Warmup recommends a suitable/compatible primer for proper adhesion along with applying pressure (e.g., walking on the entire membrane or using a 30#, 3-section floor roller in both directions) to ensure contact to the subfloor.
Warmup recommends the following primers; however, consult your setting material supplier to confirm before installing.
- Laticrete Prime-N-Bond: A versatile multi-purpose primer that works on a wide range of surfaces, including difficult-to-bond materials. It has the broadest application scope among the three, making it suitable for more challenging substrates like existing tile or gypsum-based surfaces.
- Custom Building Products Peel-N-Stick Primer: Specifically designed for use with peel-and-stick products, with good compatibility for various substrates like concrete and plywood. Ideal for vinyl tiles and membranes.
- Mapei SM Primer: Solvent-free primer aimed at enhancing the bond strength of self-adhered membranes on a variety of surfaces, with broad applications similar to Custom’s primer.
