Conduit Recommendations and Requirements for Warmup Systems

We recommend using a 1/2″ conduit for one lead, or a 3/4″ conduit if connecting two or three systems to one thermostat. In addition, we always recommend a separate 1/2″ conduit for the floor sensor.

Follow Local Electrical Code Requirements

Local electrical code requirements dictate whether it’s a requirement or optional. Installing a conduit makes easier to fish up the lead wire and sensor probe wire after drywall. In addition, it protects the lead wires from damage. Check with your installer or electrician to confirm what is best for your installation.

When Using a Conduit

We recommend applying an elbow or bending it at the base, in order to avoid sharp edges and allow smooth routing of the cable, from the floor to the electrical box. PVC or rigid metal conduits, as well as Flex/ Romex, are all acceptable. As long as these are compliant to your local code requirements, feel free to use whichever solution is appropriate in your installation.

Local electrical codes may specify whether conduit installation is mandatory or optional for your specific installation. However, opting to install a conduit brings a multitude of benefits that can greatly streamline the installation process and protect the integrity of your system.

In addition, note these two very important considerations:

  1. 1. Never fit the lead wire and sensor inside the same conduit.
  2. 2. Never fit the factory splice inside the wall or conduit. Always embed the factory connection in a cementitious material (e.g., thinset or SLU/self-leveling underlayment).

Combining the lead wire and sensor probe in one conduit can lead to interference, impacting temperature accuracy. Proximity between electrical wires and the sensor probe generates electromagnetic interference, resulting in imprecise temperature readings and compromised heating system performance. To prevent these problems, separate conduits should be utilized to keep the lead wire and sensor probe isolated.

The factory splice is the connection point where the heating cable transitions from the factory lead wire to the field wiring. This splice must be protected and secured properly to maintain the electrical continuity and performance of the system. Placing the factory splice inside the wall or conduit without additional protection can lead to various issues.

Please refer to the thermostat and heating cable installation manuals for further instructions.

In conclusion, understanding and following the recommendations and requirements for Warmup systems is crucial for a successful installation and operation. By utilizing the appropriate conduit size, adhering to local electrical code requirements, and considering important factors such as cable routing and factory connections, you can ensure the safety, functionality, and longevity of your Warmup system.

Remember to consult with your installer or electrician to confirm the best practices for your specific installation, as electrical codes may vary in different jurisdictions. Additionally, always refer to the thermostat and heating cable installation manuals for detailed instructions tailored to your Warmup system.

By implementing these guidelines, you can have confidence in the performance and compliance of your Warmup system, providing efficient and reliable heating for your space. Enjoy the comfort and benefits that come with a properly installed Warmup system, and rest assured that you have taken the necessary steps to create a safe and effective heating solution.
