How do I test my heating cable(s)?

1 min read · Updated Jun 2026

Heater resistance should be tested before, during, and after installation to ensure that the heating cable has not been compromised.

To test your heating system you will need a digital multimeter with a 200 ohm setting.

You should carry out the following tests and record your results:

Core to core – this should give you the ohms value listed in the manual for the heater(s) installed within 5%.

Both legs to ground – This should give you 0 or 1 if you are using the Warmup Alligator.

If you do not get a ohms reading(open circuit ) or you get a reading across Live/Neutral – Earth, Contact Warmup support for further assistance.

Further testing can be conducted with a megger (mega-ohmmeter).
