Do I need to prime the subfloor before installing Ultralight?

You can stick the insulation boards to the concrete slab using regular modified or pre-mixed thin set. We recommend a 1/4 x 1/4” trowel.

What kind of primer do I use with ultralight?

Primers help encapsulate dust to improve bonding with the thinset you’d apply to lay the boards. But on brand new or clean subfloors this may not be necessary. When in doubt, consider a solvent-free floor primer like Ardex P51 or Mapei SM. If your subfloor is not level or has a lot of residues, such as glue remnants from an old vinyl floor recently removed, you may need to apply a thin coat of leveler to smoothen the subfloor in preparation for your project.

Can you self-level over Ultralight?

Yes, you can self-level compound over Ultralight. This is particularly common when first applying our DCM-PRO membrane floor heating system and covering it with 3/8” of leveler. It can also be used directly over the boards when not using a heating system.

Insulation Boards: Preparing for the Installation of Floor Heating

All surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned of all dirt and debris. When installing over an existing concrete base, it is important to remove all traces of existing finishes, contamination, etc. to allow for a clean surface.

Make sure that the floor probe that came with the floor heating thermostat was installed and done so properly.

It is vital that the floor heating thermostat’s floor probe was not only installed but done so the right way.  Click “Read More” for details.

Basic Installation of the In-slab Floor Heating Cable

Warmup In-slab Floor Heating Cable is designed to be placed within the cement slab of at least 2” (50mm) in thickness, with at least 11/8” (30mm) of the slab above the heating wire. For thicker pour of up to 6”, elevate the wire mesh on which the cable is tied with bricks, wood blocks or other spacers to float the cable at the desired level. Depending on the construction of the subfloor and in general, in order to improve the efficiency of the system, you may need to apply insulation prior to the pour.
