Heated Driveway System in New Fairfield, CT

The Challenge

A family realized that they needed to improve the accessibility of their aging parents' home. Their parents live in a lovely lakeside house that happens to have a steep, inclined driveway that transitions into an elevated area leading to a two-car garage. As mobility can become increasingly difficult with age, the existing driveway and the incline presented significant daily and winter-related obstacles. Additionally, the parents' home included an elevator that brought them down from the elevated garage area to the walkway leading to the house. However, the steepness of the driveway and potential icy conditions in winter brought into question the risks of slips and falls in addition to the overall inconvenience of snow management. In order to ensure the safety of their parents and the ease of use of the driveways, the family decided to resolve these accessibility issues by finding a convenient long-term solution.

The Solution

To address these accessibility issues, the homeowner’s children decided to invest in a heated driveway system. This system was designed to operate effectively in all seasons, most importantly, in winter, when snow and ice accumulation could make the driveway hazardous. The heated driveway was installed covering the entire stretch of the steep incline and the area near the elevated garage and elevator leading to the house. The system worked by using Warmup electric WSMM Snow Melting Mats to melt snow and ice, ensuring that the surface remained clear and safe regardless of weather conditions. These mats eliminate the need for manual snow shoveling or salt spreading, as they seamlessly and automatically release heat based on the surrounding temperature and detection of precipitation. They were easily installed, as they were simply rolled out to fit the shape of the driveway. Pavers were placed on top of the mats and the mats were placed on top of a based of sand, though the mats can also be used with coverings such as related masonry, concrete pours, asphalt, and a base of crushed gravel.

The functionality of the heated driveway, all controls based and automatic, was a perfect solution to increasing safety and convenience. When snow begins to fall and accumulate on the surface, the control system will detect the temperature and moisture levels. When conditions indicate the presence of snow or ice, the system will activate and begin to heat the driveway. Electricity flows through the embedded heating elements, generating heat which is then transferred to the surface above, melting the snow and ice. Most of the snow and ice melt will evaporate as the driveway heats, leaving the surface clear of snow and ice, which reduces the risk of refreezing. In addition to the heated driveway, the existing elevator system was maintained, which made traveling to and from the garage to the walkway of the house seamless. The combined effect of the heated driveway and elevator ensured that the parents were able to move around their home environment with minimal problems, further enhancing the quality of life.

The Result

The heated driveway greatly improved the accessibility of the driveway and the safety of the parents' home by reducing snow accumulation and ice buildup. The parents are now able to move in and out of their garage and home independently and more confidently without the worry of winter weather impeding their daily routine. They also do not have to go through the costs or hassles of salting and shoveling their driveway or paying others to do it. Their heated driveway only activates when needed, optimizing energy use and cost-efficiency.

Overall, the project solved the challenge of accessibility with an effective solution for winter weather conditions in steep driveways. The parents' convenience and safety consequently had a significant impact on their general comfort and well-being. The value of this heated driveway system comes from helping the parents maintain independence and improving their living conditions as age continues to advance.
