Slip & Fall Accidents – The Terrible Truth - October 18, 2013 by Dave Mckiever

The sad truth is that most of us have either suffered the results of a slip and fall accident or know someone who has.  The Icy stairs, walkways and driveways that come with winter don’t help matters either, do they?  Here are some sobering statistics to consider.

  • Falls account for over 8 million hospital emergency room visits, representing the leading cause of visits (21.3%). Slips and falls account for over 1 million visits, or 12% of total falls.

  • Fractures are the most serious consequences of falls and occur in 5% of all people who fall.

  • Slips and falls do not constitute a primary cause of fatal occupational injuries, but represent the primary cause of lost days from work.

  • Slips and falls are the leading cause of workers’ compensation claims and are the leading cause of occupational injury for people aged 15-24 years.

  • According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), floors and flooring materials contribute directly to more than 2 million fall injuries  each year.

  • Half of all accidental deaths in the home are caused by a fall. Most fall injuries in the home happen at ground level, not from an elevation.

Pretty scary isn’t it?  One of the best ways to avoid slip and fall accidents is to be aware of your surroundings, basic things such as keeping an eye out for obstructions in front of your feet.  If you see one of those yellow signs on the floor that say caution and have a picture of a stick figure falling down, heed the warning! Look out for wet or freshly waxed surfaces. Then there is the matter of having a slip and fall on ice found on steps, walkways and driveways.  During the winter you can avoid slips and falls around your home or business by using Warmup’s quality snow melting mats & cables.  Why not consider installing heated driveways and heated sidewalks?   Interested in getting a quote for a project you have in mind?  Fill out a quote request and we will get back to you ASAP!
