Rammed Earth Homes with Radiant Heat

September 25th, 2006

The Napa Valley Register has an interesting article (story) on homes constructed with rammed earth (a technique used as far back as 2,000 B.C. in Mesopotamia and ancient China) that use radiant heating to keep heating bills under $60 per month.

Lance Emerson has lived in a rammed earth home on Old Sonoma Highway in the Carneros region of Napa for nine years. “The walls are 24 inches thick,” said Emerson. “The floors have radiant heating which can be controlled in individual rooms. Because of the thickness of the walls, the inside temperature stays consistent. In the winter, the walls absorb heat during the day and release it at night. We’re a family of four and last winter we didn’t have a heating bill over $60 a month. In the summer, we open the windows at night and close them in the morning. It stays at 65 degrees.”

Another interesting example of how radiant heating can deliver comfortable year round warmth reliably and efficiently.

Radiant Heat for Warm Walls?

September 25th, 2006

Warm floors from radiant heating installed “under floor” are becoming more common but how about warming your walls as well? According to Carol Abrahamson (www.extraordinaryhomes.com) its an idea whose time has come. The Akron Beacon Journal (story) reports how she she’s seen radiant heating showing up in some of the large walk-in showers being built in high-end homes. The radiant heating guards against chills in those wide-open showers and does so with less energy use than heating the whole room conventionally.

Concrete walls and radiant heating

August 6th, 2006

Kansas City Star reports a new type of construction designed to reduce heating costs and improve environmental performance.

Craft, owner of Kaw Valley Home Care, is promoting the use of concrete in new homes. He’s built one home in east Lawrence with concrete walls and floors, and he said the home stayed below 80 degrees during a recent week of 100-degree temperatures — without running the air conditioning.

The home’s walls are 8 inches of cement sandwiching 4 inches of Styrofoam, with the floors also made of concrete. That allowed Craft to heat the home entirely with radiant heat.

Craft predicts utility bills for the 1,500-square-foot home will be about 75 percent less than in a traditional house, though he won’t know for a while because construction was just completed.

“I think most of the time, the utility bill will just be the minimum charge that the utility companies make you pay,” Craft said.

Craft built the home without a buyer, betting that someone will be attracted to the energy efficiency enough to pay a little less than $200,000 for it. And he’s planning on building more.

July 9th, 2006

We’ve all had the experience. You wake up early and stumble to the shower. The carpeted bedroom and hallway are fine, but one step on the tile bathroom floor and you shock your tootsies wide awake. That floor is cold!

It may be a welcome feeling in summer, but it’s torture in winter.

Underfloor Heating (the old way)

June 22nd, 2006

If you’d like to experience undefloor heating the way it used to be then you could do worse than to visit Bath (England) where you will find one of the finest preserved Roman Baths with Hypocaust (underfloor heating system).

You can also once again bathe in the warm spring waters that power the system with the opening of the new Thermae Bath Spa (the waters were closed to the public in 1978 following a health scare) where you may wallow in the waters of the mineral-rich, natural hot springs.

The Roman Baths include the West Baths which contain an exceptionally well preserved set of pilae - piles of tiles through which hot air circulated to heat the floor and walls of the room above. Find out more about underfloor heating the Roman Way.

Radiant Heat & Radiant Heaters

Radiant heaters are available from a range of manufacturers and are gaining in popularity as they offer a very efficient and quick method of generating local heating - typically they are powered by electricity or gas. Bionaire offer a good range of radiant heaters.

The Warmup radiant underfloor heating system uses the same principle to produce efficient and comfortable heating but employs the whole floor as a radiator to gently and evenly warm you and your home. Please check the full benefits of radiant heat for your home or office.
